Growing up, Mario used to be my favorite Nintendo games. I'd play Super Mario World for hours. At least when my brother would stop hogging the Nintendo in his room for hours (which is one of the reasons why I didn't get much variety experience with Nintendo and Super Nintendo).
But then came Metroid. I admit I used to not like this game simply because it was exploration. At the time and until...a few years ago or something, I often preferred linear games. Metroid gave me a headache just thinking about it because of all the back tracking I'd have to do.
Truttle, a friend of mine, is the one who changed all this. We were discussing first person shooters and he challenged me to play and beat Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2. I took the challenge and luckily my brother had a copy of Metroid Prime on hand, so I was able to play right away.
Going in, I didn't enjoy myself first, and was only playing to beat the game. It took me a while to get used to the controls, but as I advanced, I only thought of beating the game to get it over with so I wouldn't have to look at it again. Yet as I played, my mind about the game started to change, and by the end, I was genuinely invested in the game. As soon as I got Metroid Prime 2, I played that not because of a dare, but because I genuinely wanted to.
After Metroid Prime 2, I started playing other Metroid games. The first one, second, Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, and Super Metroid, and beat all of them. Super Metroid is my favorite of the bunch and I find myself playing that over and over, able to find all the items with ease after recognizing where they all were. I also, at some point, read the manga, which I did like and read at least twice.
I looked forward to Metroid Prime 3, and when it came out immediately rented it (later bought it) and played it. The new controls weren't so bad to get used to. At this point I haven't had too much experience with the Wii and wasn't sure if I would like using the wiimote and nunchunks to play. But I quickly adapted to it and played the game.
Then Metroid: Other M came out, and I was excited to see that Samus finally had a voice other than text or grunting/screaming in pain. While it was hard to get used to the brand new controls, like before, I was able to get used to them after a while and played with little trouble. The only thing that really annoyed me about Other M is the long cutscenes; I just wanted to get back to the gameplay. It's not that I hate cutscenes; it's just that Other M's felt a little too long for my taste.
It is a shame the game got as much backlash as it did. I thought it was good. I am hoping that they make another Metroid game in this style, but improve on it a little. I also hope that they make a game take place after Metroid Fusion. I want to know what happens next, now that Samus is pretty much wanted (or will be) by the Galactic Federation.
Metroid's my favorite, so far, of the Nintendo games. I like the stories, the gameplay, and especially Samus, who's pretty much become my favorite space warrior/guardian. While I was younger I used to think Master Chief would beat her, but now I think Samus stands a better chance against him. But that's just my opinion.
Now if only they would make a Metroid movie. That would be awesome.
