This is one of my favorite aspects of the first Dino Crisis. While Dino Crisis 2 requires you to find all 11 Dino Files before getting infinite ammo for all weapons, DC was a little trickier. You had to be the game 3 times, with a different ending (3 in total) before you get infinite ammo for the grenade launcher.
I admit the weapons weren't varied in the first game. It was just 3 guns with different types of bullets while the sequel has many weapons, though it may be equal since the weapons had only 1 type of ammo anyway.
But the grenade launcher is one of my fav weapons, or rather bullets. It's one of the most powerful and is one of my best friends against the wholly inaccurate therizinosaurs of the game. The only two weapons I like more in the game are heat bullets (it's just awesome setting dinos on fire) and the poison dart (it kills with one hit; always except for the tyrannosaurus).
I've played many of my games with the grenade launcher. But I am capable of beating the game without the grenade launcher; I hadn't lost any skill from relying on the infinite grenades too much.
