I typed this several months ago, but never posted it anywhere. I'm not sure if it's complete yet or not. I don't recall if I was going to add anything more to this.
Jurassic the Hunted. It's a first person shooter game released on the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, X-Box, and Nintendo Wii in 2009. The game follows Dylan, joined by Rock and Sabrina, on a quest to the Bermuda Triangle where Sabrina's father disappeared. It is soon revealed that there's more to the Bermuda Triangle than what was speculated and now they must return to their own time and warn everyone.
I had recieved this game as a present last year. I had only beaten it a few times, both on normal and hard modes. The game is a fun little time killer, lasting only a couple hours even during the first playthrough. There are 12 levels in total. In each one, you make it from point A to point B, sometimes guided by an indicator on the screen. In each level you have to contend with enemies, ranging from small velociraptors to giant scorpions. The game offers an array of weaponry, including a plasma gun with self-generating ammo you obtain early in hard mode. The best feature of the game is the adrenaline mode. This slows down time and makes the dino's vital organs light up, making them easier to target. The adrenaline mode doesn't last long, though you can temporarily increase it by 30 seconds if you get a special pick up. At a few points in the game, you either mount a gun and shoot a horde of enemies coming at you or you are in a fenced in area and you have to keep the openings blocked while at the same time shoot all the dinos trying to break through. There is an entire minigame that combines both these aspects. It's called Survivor. The challenge is to survive as many rounds as you can. As each round advances, the dinos become stronger and greater in numbers. New weapons are unlocked to make it easier to deal with the dinosaurs.
Despite some of the fun aspects of the game, I find it, overall, a big letdown. I was hoping for more variety of enemies, but most of the time I found myself fighting more raptors than any other enemy. The game felt more like a raptor kill fest than a true dinosaur game. I'll be fair and say that you don't always fight raptors; on occassion you'll fight something else like a dilophosaurus or scorpion, but most of the time you'll be facing raptors. A lot of raptors at that. More raptors than I can count. It would have been more interesting if they had included more enemy types and spread the usage more evenly. Another disappointment was the tyrannosaurus. There is only one area you fight them in and the only time one appears after that, it's promptly killed by the spinosaurus, mirroring Jurassic Park 3. And the difficulty of some of the areas...There are points in the game where I admit I got so angry I felt like slamming down the controller and walking away. The reloading, though adding a sense of realism to the game, can really hurt you when you're facing something like a utahraptor or a pack of velociraptors, or even worse. It causes a delay and you must wait before being able to shoot. The adrenaline mode, the one thing that gives an edge in the fighting, doesn't seem to last long enough, and once it's drained, you must wait a while to reload before you can use it effectively again. And sometimes the battles seem outright unfair, like in the tyrannosaurus battle where you have to fight not only the tyrannosaurus but a horde of pterosaurs as well.
Another disappointment of the game were the characters and story. The characters weren't very interesting to me. They felt, overall, bland and it didn't help that you aren't with most of them much in the game. And with how short a game this is, you don't get much time to get to know them that well. There isn't even much character development for the main character. We only get a margin of a personality for each character and that's it. The story is pretty poor and predictable. There isn't even much to it. Just some people trying to find a guy who disappeared, finding him, finding out about a disaster, and returning home. That's about it. There isn't a lot of depth to the story or the characters. And it's not just the characters and story that need some work. Normally I wouldn't complain too much about something as trivial as water effects, but this really bugged me as I played the game. In a few instances, there's water, but you can't tell it's water because it doesn't move. At all. Oh it makes a sound when you go in it, but there's no ripple or splash effects. So yeah, this is basically a 3D game with worse water effects than Classic Spyro 2 and 3, games almost a decade younger than Jurassic: The Hunted. That's pretty sad I think. At least the water in Spyro 2 and 3 made some kind of splash to show it was water.
If I had to rate the game between 1 and 10, I'd rate it a 6 out of 10. The gameplay is pretty good and the adrenaline mode adds to the fun. But I felt the poor characterization and noninteresting story dragged the game down and prevented it from being as good as it could have been. The game is a good time killer and the dinosaurs do have good designs, but if you are looking for more in a game, don't bother getting this game.
1. Gameplay tip: Adrenaline Mode
Tip: Adrenaline Mode is your friend in this game. It allows you to slow down time briefly and see the vital organs of your opponent glow brightly. This gives you an edge in battle, allowing you more time to react, aim, and shoot. Use Adrenaline Mode during battles to make it easier to take out those pesky dinosaurs. Adrenaline Mode can also be used to counter. When you're attacked by an enemy and can't tell where they are coming from, use Adrenaline Mode to turn around in a circle and look for those glowing vital organs. Another handy use for Adrenaline Mode is allowing you to see enemies normally hidden in the background. This allows you a chance to kill them before they have a chance to come after you. Just remember that Adrenaline Mode can only be used a short time and drains fast and replenishes slowly.
2. Gameplay tip: Multitask
Tip: There are times when focusing on just one task is a bad idea. In the game there'll be times when you are confronted by many enemies at once or a couple powerful ones. Don't focus on just one area. Keep an eye on your environment and look for any enemy coming towards you. During sequences like where you have to defend a barracade, never stay at one area too long. Constantly switch between openings, repairing them while killing any dinosaur within range.
3. Gameplay tip: Using Grenades
Tip: Grenades are handy at taking out enemies, especially when you're running backwards or low on ammo. A single grenade is capable of killing nearly all enemies within the small area it lands in. When you're being chased by multiple enemies, use the grenades to try to take out some of them. You can even use grenades against larger enemies such as Spike. But be very caefule with how you use them. Grenades harm not only enemies; they will harm you as well. If you are too close to the area the grenade lands in, you'll either get hurt or killed. So before you throw that grenade, make sure the intended target is not too close.
4. Gameplay tip: Conserve Ammo Through Melee
Tip: When you are low on ammo, another way to fight without resorting to grenades is melee attacking. When you get close enough to an opponent, you can melee attack them using your current weapon. It can take longer to kill some enemies and if there are multiple enemies, melee attacking can leave you open to attack yourself. But if you don't have a lot of ammo left, melee attacking still gives you a means of defending yourself.
5. Gameplay tip: Plasma Gun
Tip: The Plasma Gun is only available in hard mode. It's located near the skeleton that Dylan examines at the start of the game. The Plasma Gun has a sniper function, cannot be upgraded, and regenerates its ammo within seconds. It can kill some enemies with a single well placed shot. It comes in handy in areas where you need to defend the barricade as it eliminates the need to get more ammo. It's a useful item and should be kept through the duration of hard mode. However, there are weaknesses to this weapon. Be careful not to use up all the shots too soon. You need to wait for it to replenish and in that time, you're vulnerable to attack. Do not rely on the Plasma Gun alone to get through hard mode.
6. Gameplay tip: Mushrooms Of Doom
Tip: In the cave areas of the game, there are large protrusions from the ground. Although they don't look it, they are mushrooms. These mushrooms will explode if you get too close to them, sometimes resulting in death. When going through the cave, make sure to shoot as many of these as you can. This will lessen the changes of getting killed yourself. But sometimes you can use the mushrooms to your advantage. When there's an enemy or group of enemies coming towards you, look for one of these death mushrooms. If you time your shot right, when the mushrooms explode they will instantly kill enemies close enough to it. Items similar to mushrooms, gunpowder filled barrels, come in handy in other parts of the game, killing raptors that get too close.
7. Gameplay tip: Kill Pterosaurs Ahead Of Time
Tip: In the level Rise Above, the first task you need to do is cross a bridge that runs along several nests of pterosaurs. When you go through them, the pterosaurs will go beserk and attack you. When walking through, you'll need to shoot any pterosaurs that come at you. However, this area can be made easier, though take a little longer, if you kill the pterosaurs before you enter the nest. Using Adrenaline Mode and the weapon of your choice, you can kill as many pterosaurs as you please before you enter the nest. Be sure to also take out any pterosaurs that are nesting. Once on the bridge, keep using the Adrenaline Mode tactic to spot any pterosaurs in the distance and shoot them before they take off after you. While this will be more time consuming, it does make going through here easier.
1. Tyrannosaurus boss battle
Tip: The tyrannosaurus boss battle consists of two parts. The only difference between the two is the color of the tyrannosaurus. The first one is green and the second is red. During the battle, there'll be a flock of pterosaurs that will come down and attack you while the tyrannosaurus is away. During this battle, you'll need to focus both on the tyrannosaurus and the skies. When the tyrannosaurus is close, shoot it in the chest and shoulder area until it runs away. As soon as it runs away, point the gun up. Pterosaurs will swoop down from different angles. Use Adrenaline Mode to make it easier to hit the targets. Keep doing this until you see the tyrannosaurus. Allow Adrenaline Mode to replenish some as you shoot the tyrannosaurus. Be careful of the gun ammo as well. This also needs to be replinished, which can be accomplished through brief pauses of shooting. Repeat the same tactic for both tyrannosauruses.
2. Utahraptor boss battle
Tip: Except in the first instance, utahraptors attack in pairs. These are among the toughest enemies to face due to their combination of speed and power plus their high HP. Adrenaline Mode is crucial in these battles. If you have any powerup available, use it during these battles. Because two attack you at the same time, do not focus on just one utahraptor. Instead, change focus constantly. Keep your distance and use Adrenaline Mode to dodge attacks and to also shoot at the vital organs. If you must, use melee attacks to conserve ammo and to just deal damage in general. Other than that, there isn't a lot I can say about these boss battles as they aren't very different from fighting smaller raptors.
3. Spinosaurus boss battle
Tip: There are two battles with Spike the spinosaurus, one out in the open and the other at the fort. The first battle is actually harder than the second because there's nothing protecting you from Spike getting too close to you. In the first battle, if you're low on health, make a mad dash to one of the ammunition containers and replenish it. When in this battle, keep an eye on Spike as well as the environment. Despite Spike's size, he can move pretty fast and, if you're in a corner, it'll be difficult to dodge his attacks. Don't get too close to Spike or he'll grab you and lift you up. When this happens, use your weapons to shoot at his chest until he lets go. If you wait too long, particularly due to reloading time, he'll eat you and will have to fight him all over again. There is a pickup here that will give you 30 seconds extra of Adrenaline Mode. This can only be used once. When you use it, shoot Spike repeatedly in the chest and shoulder areas. Shoot him enough and he'll pause and rear up, stunned. Take this opportunity to throw grenades or continue shooting him in that area. When reloading, constantly walk backwards to keep space between you and Spike. Repeat this strategy until Spike eventually stops attacking you.
For the second boss battle, run over underneath the platform and grab the RPG. Run up the platform and attack Spike through the available openings. Use Adrenaline Mode to make it easier to attack Spike. Each time you run low on ammo, rush over to the ammo container and replenish it. When you stand in front of an opening, Spike may walk over and stick his head through. This is what you want. This gives you a point blank target to shoot a few times. Try to trick Spike into poking his head through as many times as you can and bombard him with rockets. But don't forget to shoot him when he's still ramming the fort entrance. Like before, try aiming for the chest and shoulder area. After a few minutes of doing this, Spike won't fall, but the game will cut to a scene and that's it. Game over.
